Chicago, IL - Over 45 attorneys, law students and other professionals turned out for the Muslim Bar Association's Annual Iftaar.
The event drew partners from small, medium and large law firms, attorneys from the state's attorney's office, the public defender's office and the public guardian's office as well as law students from several local law schools.
"Ten years ago this organization was founded by a group of attorneys, the most senior of which had about 3 years of experience" noted Junaid Afeef, MBA's current president. "Today's event is a testament to how far the Muslim legal community has come in just one short decade."
Among the notable personalities were Azhar Usman and Mazen Asbahi. Azhar Usman is an attorney turned comedian of international fame. Azhar is one of three Muslim comics in the "Allah Made Me Funny" World Tour.
Mazen Asbahi, a past president of the MBA, is a senior associate at Schiff Hardin and was Senator Obama's national Muslim and Arab outreach coordinator. Mazen opted to resign from his volunteer post at the Obama campaign earlier this summer shortly after it became apparent that a right wing led character assassination was to ensue against him.
The Iftaar provided law students and recent graduates with an opportunity to seek career advice and explore placement opportunities. Rasheed Ahmed and Firoz Vohra of Indian Muslim Council - USA attended the Iftaar in hopes of meeting prospective recruits for organizer and director positions at IMC-USA.
The event was hosted at Khyber Pass Restaurant located at 233 E. Wacker Drive. Special arrangements were made to ensure zabiha/halal food and prayer accommodations.
